Dominique Strauss-Kahn arrest and Arnold Schwarzengger love child: This week on Twitter
(CBS/What's Trending) - It's been a busy news week, and that means a busy week on Twitter as well!
International Monetary Fund president Dominique Strauss-Kahn was arrested last Saturday in New York City in for sexual assault charges, setting the twittersphere abuzz. Who would replace him? Was it a setup? Hasn't something like this happened before?
According to Clusterstock, a former IMF worker, the situation for women at the IMF was "sort of like Pirates Of The Caribbean." This is a bad thing, right? Think Progress blogger Matt Yglesias chimed in that DSK "may be an odious rapist, but he's also a pretty good IMF Managing-Director." The story is still unfolding, and this looks like it's going to be a hot topic for several weeks.
In the business and tech world, it turns out Internet stocks are still a thing. Online professional network LinkedIn had its IPO on Thursday, soaring to over $100 before closing at $94.25. The Economist opined, "LinkedIn's stratospheric valuation looks like a sign that the tech bubble is already starting to happen," and MarketWatch agreed that "LinkedIn's IPO could ruin the tech sector." Stock tweeters went crazy following the ups and downs (but mostly ups) throughout the day and discussing investment strategies for the hot property. To short or not to short seemed to be investors' biggest dilemma.
And now for political scandals! Tuesday, news broke that former governor of California/Terminator/husband of Maria Shriver Arnold Schwarzengger had a secret love child with a former member of his household staff. Speculation flew as to who the mistress could be, and the dirt keeps getting dirtier. According to Gossipcop, "Arnold Schwarzenegger made down payment on baby mama's new house," and to add insult to injury, via Poponthepop, "Maria Shriver used to joke that Mildred Patricia Baena's son looked like Arnold Schwarzenegger." At least she knows what her soon-to-be-ex-husband looks like!
In real political news, President Obama delivered a major policy address on Thursday about the Middle East, ruffling some major feathers by advocating a return to Israeli-Palestinian borders established in 1967. Israel was less than pleased with this stance. And Friday, guess who shows up at the White House? Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu. It was on the official schedule, but I can imagine an awkward lunch, followed by this: "#Netanyahu, in front of #Obama and the media, rejects president's call for Palestinian state based on pre-1967 borders" (via Fox News). Can you say, "uncomfortable"? The road to peace in the Middle East continues to be a less than smooth ride.
In the world of glitz, glam, movies, and celebrities, Cannes Film Festival ruled the week. The Festival got a little more "excitement" than usual this year when director Lars Von Trier declared himself to be a Nazi during a press conference for his film "Melancholia." Good times all around. He was subsequently banned from the festival. "Take Shelter "won the Critics Week Prize, and the race for the top award, the Palm d'Or, is on! Styledotcom had "the scoop on Giovanna Battaglia's best-of-gala gown from the amfAR event in Cannes." And the Doha Film Institute wants to know, "What is 'The Artist' and why is it such a hit at #Cannes?" And of course, Brad Pitt was there, so everyone had a good time.
