Devonta Pollard, Univ. of Alabama basketball player, charged with kidnapping
(CBS/AP) DEKALB, Miss. - A University of Alabama basketball player is among the three people facing charges in the April kidnapping of a 6-year-old Kemper County girl.
Kemper County Sheriff James Moore tells WTOK-TV that Devonta Pollard and Joyce Johnigan were arrested Tuesday in Kemper County on a charge of conspiracy to commit kidnapping.
Moore also says Shaquayla Johnigan was arrested in Hattiesburg on the same charge.
The athlete's mother, Jesse Mae Pollard, allegedly picked up Jashayla Hopson from East Kemper Elementary school on April 30th then dropped her off the side of a road, unharmed, a day later. The child apparently knocked on the door of a nearby residence and the homeowner called authorities.
According to the Clarion Ledger, Pollard graduated from Kemper County High School where he was a national-level prospect as a forward. He was also the Gatorade Player of the Year in Mississippi and had been named to the McDonald's All-American team.
