The Coyotes have won two straight following their first two-game losing streak of the season and have 42 points, just two behind first-place Dallas in the Pacific Division.
Brendan Shanahan had a goal and an assist and Igor Larionov scored the other goal for the Red Wings. The two-time defending Stanley Cup champions have lost three straight, four out of five and are 4-10 against teams with .500 or better records.
Nikolai Khabibulin made 36 saves in the Phoenix net. Detroit's Chris Osgood had 23 stops.
The teams traded first-period goals from Larionov and Tkachuk.
Larionov took a left-circle pass from Sergei Fedorov and one-timed it past Khabibulin at 11:54. Tkachuk tied it 2:19 later by redirecting Keith Carney's shot from the blue line past Osgood.
Drake went over Detroit's Nicklas Lidstrom to push a pass from Roenick into the net just 49 seconds into the second period to give Phoenix a 2-1 lead.
Shanahan tied it with his 16th goal on an outstanding individual effort. He came around the net and, with Phoenix's Gerald Diduck hanging on his left side, put a one-handed wraparound past Khabibulin at 10:35.
Ylonen put the Coyotes back ahead on a power play at 13:15 when he rammed home Jyrki Lumme's rebound. It was just the third goal of the season for Ylonen but his second in two games.
Numminen made it 4-2 when his shot from the slot got over Osgood's left shoulder 10:12 into the third. Renick caught Osgood out of the net and scored his 11th goal 1:09 later.
Corkum scored his third goal of the season with 2:56 remaining.
