The Australian-born princess gave the conference's keynote speech Monday. She read a poem by Finnish author Marta Tikkanen, which she says demonstrates the complexity of the problem.

According to a report in Royalty in the News, the 40-year-old princess spoke about the work of the Mary Foundation in reaching out to domestic abuse victims and speaking out on the issue.

Before giving the speech, the mother of four, including 1-year-old twins, visited a Washington shelter that aids victims of domestic abuse and spoke to some of the women and children there.

She also presented a $2.3 million donation to The Inter-American Development Bank, from the Danish government.
