Deadly Landslide In Kyrgyzstan

Thirty-three people are feared dead after a landslide buried a village in southern Kyrgyzstan on Monday, emergency officials said.

The slide buried 12 houses in the mountainous Budalyk village in Kyrgyzstan's Alay district, about 430 miles south of the capital, Bishkek, Emergencies Ministry spokesman Emil Akmatov said.

Akmatov said the death toll was based on preliminary information and might change. He said 12 other people had been injured.

Akmatov said rescue workers were working at the site and Emergencies Minister Temirbek Akmataliyev had arrived in the disaster area.

The village is in an area susceptible to avalanches, and authorities are planning to move its residents to a safe area, he said.

Mountains cover more than 90 percent of the Central Asian nation, and avalanches are common.

Earlier this month, a landslide in the country's south killed five children.
