(CBS News) Microsoft's new tablet called Surface is tech world's latest competitor against the industry leader, Apple's iPad.

Tuesday, New York Times tech columnist David Pogue suggested just entering the market has the potential to push the tech world forward.

"We all naturally want there to be a winner," Pogue said on "CBS This Morning." "Everyone wants to know, will Microsoft kill the iPad? And will Apple dominate forever? And actually, we don't really want that. First of all, it never really happens. People say, 'Oh, Sony's a has-been.' Wait a minute, Sony's still a multibillion dollar corporation. And second of all, we want the competition, we want the choice, we want the new ideas. Anytime that someone like Microsoft can put the pressure on Apple to create better ideas, newer designs, they should."

The Microsoft product represents a difference in thinking from the industry leader, according to Pogue.

"Apple's policy has always been 'We control the choices, we're going to give you very limited options, but we're going to make it all work together, we're going to make it beautiful.' So, if you have an iPad, you know that the connectors in every dock, car, hotel room will fit your tablet. Microsoft won't have that. ... So, one's more open and chaotic, one's more closed and perfect, you know, obsession-driven. So, it's a big difference in philosophy."
