Darren Criss apologizes to Caitlyn Jenner for quip in "Hedwig"
Darren Criss, who plays a gender-queer rocker in the Broadway musical "Hedwig and the Angry Inch," is apologizing to Caitlyn Jenner and the LGBTQ community for an insensitive remark he made about the former-Olympian during one of his last performances before Taye Diggs takes over the part on July 22.
An audience member tweeted about his dissatisfaction with the comment Criss, who is straight but played a gay man on "Glee," made while in character during Wednesday's performance. "Tonight, Darren Criss, as HEDWIG said, 'man, woman, moman, wan, Bruce Jenner, whatever you are,'" the Marc Lacognata wrote on Twitter. "And it was very distasteful."
Soon, some listeners across the Internet began to accuse Criss of transphobia, prompting Criss to apologize and reassert his commitment to LGBTQ activism.
"I want to sincerely apologize to Caitlyn Jenner, all transgender people, and anyone who was offended for my words on stage during Tuesday evening's performance," the star wrote to his 1 million-plus followers on Facebook. "In no way do the remarks reflect my personal belief system or my support for transgender people. However, I do realize the severity of the comment and the weight that words can carry and for that, I take full responsibility."
"I commend Caitlyn on her strength and for spreading acceptance around the globe," the actor continued. "I have been and remain a proud and unwavering ally of the LGBTQIA community, and will continue to walk alongside my friends on the road to full equality and acceptance," he wrote.
