Cure For Summer's Bad Hair Days
A lot of women hate the summer heat and humidity because it does terrible things to their hair.
But The Early Show's beauty and fashion guru, David Evangelista, says putting your hair in a ponytail can become a thing of your past: There are ways to avoid bad hair days and go from drab to fab, no matter what the weather.
He showed on Monday how to work with your hair type to look great despite heat and humidity.
TAMING FRIZZY CURLS
First, take already dry hair and mist very lightly with water, to re-moisten the curl. Use a diffuser to add some heat so the curls perk up a bit. Another tip: always scrunch hair with a diffuser and blow the air down while using your hands to scrunch upwards — this keeps the cuticle for separating into a frizzy mess.
After hair is dry, take a smoothing serum or cream, starting with a little product and building up as needed, and re-scrunch through hair for about 30 seconds to set product and prepare for a curling iron.
To define curls and make them set in place all day, using a curling iron (the desired sized barrel of the curling iron is based on the hair length), take 1/2" to 1" sections and wrap hair around the iron, ending up at the bottom of the iron. Do not clamp unless you need to at the ends of hair. Hold in place for a few seconds until hair has taken form. Then, flip your head upside down and scrunch with your hands. For a finishing touch, adorn with rubber elastic, pins, headbands, etc.
PUMPING UP LIMP, LIFELESS HAIR
First, take a volumizing spray and apply to roots in a section to section manner. Mousse also works well — but you may want to softly mist your hair with some water before applying.. Using your fingers like a rake, lift your roots up to the sky while blowing air directly on roots using a back and forth motion with your hairdryer. Make sure volumizer is set in hair while blowing in a horizontal direction.
Also, using a small comb and lifting the roots as you blow gives increased amounts of volume. Let your hair cool for a second, add a dab more volumizer and repeat (you can also flip upside down and work roots the same way). After blowing is complete, assess volume and continue or stop. Take sections of hair and mist roots lightly with light holding hairspray to "lock" in volume
QUICK FIX FOR OILY/DRAB HAIR: CREATE A WHIMSICAL BUN
First, take a bit of hair powder and apply to roots. Use fingers and massage into your scalp (a tip: baby powder also works well in this situation). Mist hair with a light, super fine hairspray and use your blow dryer to create some texture. By doing this, it will lock the bun into place and will hold for hours.
Next, using your hands, pull your hair back into low ponytail. You can create a high ponytail and place on top of the head to create a ballerina-type bun. Mist your hands with a dry spray, and spray the ponytail lightly.
Next, take hair and twist in a clockwise motion. Using one or two hairpins, insert the pin in an upward direction to secure tightly. Adorn with hair accessories if desired.
A tip: do not use pomades if your hair is oily because the oils in these types of products can make hair look very greasy.
