Cullen Finnerty, former NFL player, missing after fishing trip, report says
(CBS/AP) WEBBER TOWNSHIP, Mich. - A law enforcement official says a former national college football champion quarterback who went missing during a fishing trip in Michigan had a "nervous episode" and ran into the woods.
Lake County Sheriff Robert Hilts made the comment to the Ludington Daily News about Cullen Finnerty, who was reported missing Sunday night after he went fishing near Baldwin, about 65 miles north of Grand Rapids.
According to CBS Detroit, family members dropped him off with a boat by the River on Sunday. Upon returning from fishing and docking his boat, Finnerty called his wife saying he was scared and was wandering through the woods.
Crews reportedly searched all day Monday with the help from family members and former teammates.
Authorities say searchers found a small pontoon boat Finnerty was using to fish.
Messages seeking comment about the status of the search were left with Hilts on Tuesday.
MLive.com says Finnerty is married and has two young children.
Finnerty led Grand Valley State to three Division II national titles last decade and briefly was a member of the NFL's Baltimore Ravens.
