Cross-dressing robber hits Pittsburgh "Money Mart," police say
(CBS) PITTSBURGH - Police in Pittsburgh are searching for a man who was wearing a long dark wig and carrying a Louis Vuitton bag when he allegedly assaulted a woman working at a check-cashing business and robbed the store on Thursday, March 7, CBS Pittsburgh reports.
It's believed the suspect was just trying to cross up the cops.
Officers descended on the "Money Mart" at around 8:30 a.m. after receiving a report that the suspect followed a female employee into the business when she opened the store and proceeded to attack her. According to the woman, she was struck by the suspect on her face and head, the station reports.
The front counter and lobby of the business was reportedly trashed as the woman was roughed up the suspect. A gunshot was also fired, but missed the worker, the station says.
Crime scene officers gathered evidence and prints from the scene but the suspect was long gone.
The suspect is described as a male, disguised as a woman. He was reportedly wearing a scarf that fell to the ground and was recovered by police. K-9 dogs were being used in an attempt to track the alleged robber's scent.
Sources close to the investigation tell CBS Pittsburgh this isn't the first time the store has been robbed. The drug store next door was victimized by a robber within the last two months.
The woman who was attacked was taken to a hospital for basic treatment and observation.
