Coyotes, Canucks Skate To Tie
The Phoenix Coyotes ran into a hot goalie again.
Vancouver goalie Garth Snow had 43 saves and Chris McAllister's first goal in almost a year lifted the Canucks to a 3-3 tie with the Coyotes on Sunday night.
Snow stopped 20 shots in the first period, as Vancouver (10-13-3) extended its unbeaten streak to 1-0-2.
"The more I see Snow, the more I'm expecting that kind of goaltending from him," Phoenix coach Jim Schoenfeld said. "He's having a good season."
Edmonton's Mikhail Shtalenkov stopped 45 shots in a 4-3 victory over Phoenix on Wednesday night, ending the Coyotes' 14-game unbeaten streak (13-0-1).
McAllister, who has split his time between Vancouver and the minors over the last two seasons, scored his second career goal with 11:07 left in the game after Phoenix defenseman Deron Quint fell while chasing the puck deep in his own end.
"It's disappointing for sure," said Phoenix defenseman Teppo Numminen, who had three assists. "We should've won the game the way we fought and played hard. It's frustrating to come away with a tie."
"Now we know what we have to work on is bearing down and maybe doing more scoring drills in practice" the Coyotes' Keith Tkachuk said. "But we've got the guys here who can score. It'll come. It's better to have those chances than not have those chances."
Jeremy Roenick scored twice for the Coyotes (15-3-3), who blew a third-period lead for only the second time this season, with both games ending in ties.
Phoenix also gave up more than two goals for only the third time, and the second in three games.
Coyotes goalie Jimmy Waite extended his unbeaten streak to seven games (5-0-2) eight (6-0-2) dating back to last season. Waite made a game-saving stop with seven minutes left in regulation when he slid across the crease and got his pads on a shot from Bill Muckalt.
Phoenix went 1-for-5 on the power-play, including one man-advantage opportunity that stretched into the first minute of overtime.
McAllister's other goal came on Dec. 27, 1997 in a 3-3 tie against Dallas.
"Almost a year, hopefully I'll improve on that a little bit more," McAllister joked. "It's a big goal for the team. It gives us a point against a top-place team like Phoenix and hopefully it gives us confidence to go on the road again."
The Canucks, who had only 24 shots, have been out-shot 83-42 in their last two games.
"If it wasn't for Snow, we wouldn't have come up with a point," Vancouver coach Mike Keenan said.
The opening period ended 2-2 although the Coyotes had a 22-10 shooting edge. The shots were three short of Phoenix's franchise record for a period.
Dallas Drake had the Coyotes' other goal, in the first. Vancouver's Donald Brashear and and Markus Naslund also had first-period goals.
Phoenix had a goal disallowed in the first, as Teppo Numminen was ruled to be in the crease when the puck went in off Muckalt's skate.
The Coytes outshot the Canucks 24-0 over a 17:09 span that ended when Messier fired a shot on 6:50 into the second period.
Roenick's eighth goal of the season, gave the Coyotes a 3-2 lead 5:14 into the second period.
