Couple accused of shoplifting groceries in months-long scheme
REHOBOTH, Del. -- State troopers arrested a couple on Mother's Day for allegedly shoplifting hundreds of dollars worth of food from a grocery store, reports CBS Philly.
According to police, David Sankey, 53, and Diana Sankey, 60, began making daily trips to a local GIANT store in early February. They would pay for the items in their cart, but security footage apparently shows them leaving the store with unpaid items, according to the station.
The couple would allegedly hide items, such as meats and hygiene products, on themselves and then leave the store.
Investigators estimate the Sankeys stole approximately more than $790 worth of groceries in just three months, according to CBS Philly. The couple was arrested Sunday afternoon.
They were both charged with 83 counts of shoplifting under $1,500 as well as 83 counts of conspiracy in the third degree, reports the station. They were later released on a $16,600 unsecured bond.
