Countdown To Royal Wedding
Final preparations are under way in Britain for the latest royal wedding. This Saturday, Prince Edward, the youngest son of Queen Elizabeth, will marry Sophie Rhys-Jones, who is already fending off comparisons with the late Princess Diana.
Princess-to-be Sophie may not find it an easy ride, reports CBS News Correspondent Jesse Schulman, but in an interview broadcast Sunday night, Rhys-Jones said she knows what she's getting into.
"I was fully aware of what family Edward belonged to and, therefore, if I had any reservations about the potential situation...I would have gotten out a long time ago," she said.
The prince said constant speculation forced him to put off popping the question.
"Every time, they [the press] insisted on asking the question, it just delayed it for a bit longer," he said.
Rhys-Jones is 34 with a career of her own, soft-spoken yet self-assured. Still, it's a bit daunting, meeting your boyfriend's parents when his mother is the queen of England.
Says the bride-to-be, "They're not that scary."
That remains to be seen. Princess Diana didn't find royal life to be a bed of roses. But perhaps an older and wiser princess will fare better.
Already, the British press seems to consider Rhys-Jones fair game. Two weeks ago, The Sun, Britain's largest-selling tabloid, published an 11-year-old snapshot showing Rhys-Jones engaged in some horseplay with radio disc jockey Chris Tarrant, during a business trip to Spain in 1988. It showed Tarrant pulling up her bikini top, exposing one breast, and both are laughing.
Rhys-Jones, then 23, was a press officer working for Tarrant.
Rhys-Jones was reported to feel "utterly betrayed" by the publication of the photograph, which was taken by a co-worker.
