Cops: Man killed store clerk, shot father of 10 in Chicago

CHICAGO - Joey Jones, a Chicago man has been charged for allegedly killing a convenience store clerk and shooting another man in two separate incidents on Tuesday, reports CBS Chicago.

Jones, 31, who is charged with first-degree murder and attempted murder, was due in bond court Wednesday, according to the station. Police said the suspect is responsible for the fatal shooting of 57-year-old convenience store cashier Omar Maslat and the shooting of 50-year-old Brion Payne in Uptown, Chicago on the same day.

The suspect was arrested after police found his alleged getaway car - a Ford Crown Victoria - near his home. Jones was questioned for 12 hours being he was charged in both shootings, according to the station.

Police said Jones shot Maslat outside the store around 6:10 a.m. Tuesday in a dispute over merchandise. The suspect allegedly shot the cashier when he attempted to stop him from leaving the store. Maslat was later pronounced dead at the hospital, according to CBS Chicago.

Not four hours later, police say Jones shot Payne in the head in Uptown. CBS Chicago reports that Payne, a father of 10, was trying to get coffee at a nearby Dunkin Donuts when he was shot. He was taken to the hospital and was in serious condition Wednesday morning.

Authorities have not released a motive in the second shooting.

"He is a loving guy," Tyshayna Culpepper, Payne's daughter, told the station. "He's a good person, and it kind of sucks that somebody would do something like that."

Payne's girlfriend, Jessica Rosado, echoed his daughter's sentiment. "He'd come home every day from work, spend time with his kids, go work, come home. I don't know why somebody would do this to him," she said.
