Cops: Idaho triple murder suspect on suicide watch

MOSCOW, Idaho - The man accused of fatally shooting three people, including his adoptive mother, then leading police on a 25-mile car chase over the weekend is under suicide watch in jail.

John Lee, 29, is now facing felony eluding charges, three first degree murder charges, and one attempted murder charge, reports CBS affiliate KREM. The shootings took place in Idaho Saturday, and the car chase led police into Washington State, said Washington's Whitman County Prosecutor Denis Tracy.

Lee made his first appearance in a Whitman County court Monday afternoon on the felony eluding charge, for which the judge set a $500,000 bail.

Lee is suspected of killing David Trail, 76, Belinda Niebuhr, 47, and his adoptive mother, Terri Grzebielski, 61, at separate locations.

Michael Chin, 39, of Seattle was shot in the arm and leg while visiting with Trail. He was being treated at a Spokane hospital.

No motive has been established.

KREM reports that Tracy said Lee had a loaded semi-automatic rifle in that car and it was a "miracle no one else was hurt."

The prosecutor reportedly told the judge he intends to prosecute Lee on the eluding charge before he is returned to Idaho. Extradition will not be decided until at least Friday at 3:00 p.m. after Lee's preliminary hearing and arraignment.

Lee grew up in Moscow, Idaho, according to KREM. He graduated from Moscow High School in 2004 where he went by his adopted name, Kane Grzebielski.

Officials reportedly said the Grzebielski family adopted him at just three months old. Lee also spent time in Omaha, Nebraska where investigators said he changed his name to from Kane Grzebielski to John Lee in 2012.

According to KREM, neighbors said Lee was quiet and rarely looked anyone in the eye, but that they never suspected he could be capable of the crimes he is accused of.
