Cops: 2 charged after drugs found near bed of child who died

PITTSBURGH - Two people were arrested after an 18-month-old child was found unresponsive in a Pennsylvania home, and police say the child later died from a possible overdose of heroin, morphine or both, reports CBS Pittsburgh.

Police say the child - Naveah Andiorio - was rushed to the hospital Tuesday evening after she was found unresponsive in her mother's bed in their Spring Hill home.

Sondra Rector, 24, the child's mother, and William Kablach, 62, were taken into custody and charged with endangering the welfare of a child.

Police say the mother told them she used heroin and left some other stamp bags - or individual doses - of the drug and a syringe near the child while the woman slept. The woman reportedly said that when she woke up the child was unresponsive, and that Kablach was shouting about a missing 100 mg morphine pill that he had also left near the girl.

Neighbors say they are not surprised by the circumstances surrounding the child'ss death. They say heroin has been a growing problem in the neighborhood for years, reports CBS Pittsburgh.

"It's heartbreaking. I'm going to have trouble not crying over it," said a neighbor, who asked not to be identified. "But I guess it's the reality of addiction."

Police are continuing to investigate the death, which they classified as a homicide, according to the station.
