Cool Tools For Do-It-Yourselfers

With the housing slump and now the fear of a recession, a lot of homeowners are holding off on any big home remodeling projects -- such as a kitchen or bath renovation.

However, many may be looking at tackling smaller fix-ups themselves.

On The Early Show Friday, James Lunday, an expert carpenter and host of the new HGTV show "Rip + Renew," offered some suggestions on the latest home improvement tools for those do-it-yourselfers.

Editor's note: The following product descriptions were prepared in part with information provided by the manufactuers.

Stanley FatMax AntiVibe Hammer

The new Stanley FatMax Xtreme AntiVibe Hammer combines its patented AntiVibe tuning fork technology with a new grip design that reduces torque by more than 30 percent -- easing the trauma associated with prolonged use. Though Stanley hammers have incorporated vibration dampening technology for almost a decade, new research has shown that torque -- the rotational force that occurs when striking a nail off-center -- actually causes as much strain on muscles and tendons as vibration when transferred into a user's arm, wrist, and elbow. Now, the new FatMax Xtreme AntiVibe Hammer is designed to reduce both torque and vibration. In addition to the added features in the grip, the new hammer design is precision-balanced and incorporates a magnetic nail starter for one-handed operation and extended reach. Available in 16 and 20 oz. nail hammers with curve or rip claws, as well as 20-, 22-, 24- and 28-oz. framing hammers in either a checker or smooth face configuration.
PRICE: $25 for the 20oz.; available in hardware stores and home centers nationwide.
