Clinton Says "We Need To Dig Ourselves Out" of Economic Hole

(CBS)
From CBS News' Fernando Suarez:

COMMERCE, CALIF. -- Hillary Clinton unveiled a $70 billion economic stimulus plan aimed at getting money to middle class Americans who will then spend money to help jumpstart the economy.

"We're in a big hole and we need to dig ourselves out," Clinton said to the IBEW Local 11 union in Commerce. "I'm going to pass out shovels to everyone."

Clinton's visit to Commerce drew a crowd of about 400, many of whom were union workers, who enthusiastically gave Clinton several standing ovations throughout her speech including when she spoke about getting the "two oilmen out of the White House" and telling the crowd that no person will be "invisible" to her.

Clinton says the economy is headed into a recession and is calling on President Bush and the Congress to help stimulate the economy. Her plan would also offer immediate energy relief to 37 million Americans. Clinton says that in addition to her five-part plan to jumpstart the economy, she is calling for a $40 billion in tax rebates for working class families. Clinton says her plan is "fast acting" to kick-start the economy, it should be temporary to remain fiscally responsible and progressive to get the most out of it.

During the event Clinton took questions. One funny moment came when someone yelled, "Hillary, marry me baby!" After the laughter subsided Clinton said, "That is certainly the kindest offer but, I would probably get arrested."
