(CBS News) Christian Bale got emotional at the MTV Movie Awards after a montage of Christopher Nolan's first two Batman movies showed scenes of Heath Ledger as the Joker in "The Dark Knight."

The actor fought back tears Sunday as he stood on stage with Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Gary Oldman, where they were presenting new footage from their highly-anticipated film "The Dark Knight Rises."

"Wow, great to remember Heath at that moment. Wonderful to see Heath Ledger there," Bale said as the clip ended. He then bowed his head and appeared to get choked up as the audience applauded for Ledger.

Ledger died of an accidental prescription drug overdose on Jan. 22, 2008, at the age of 28. He received a posthumous Academy Award for his portrayal of the Joker.

Bale quickly composed himself and the three men introduced Nolan, who then presented the new footage from his third and final Batman film.

"The Dark Knight Rises" will be released in theaters on July 20.
