Hosted by Queen Latifah, the ceremony honored some the brightest stars in popular culture. And the tributes to both entertainers were tearful, emotive and powerful.

Chris Brown made his own tearful return as he paid tribute to the late pop icon Michael Jackson, exactly one year after the singer's death. Brown started his performance by dancing to a medley of Jackson's hits. He ended with "Man in the Mirror" and got emotional almost immediately after the song started.

Notable winners from lthe ceremony included female rapper Nicki Minaj who took home the honor for Best Female Hip-Hop Artist. She dedicated the award to Dwayne Carter (rapper Lil' Wayne) and for female hip-hop artists: "This is not for me, this is for all of us," she said.

Alicia Keys, who is engaged to hip hop producer Swizz Beats, also won Best Female R&B Artist. She was visibly pregnant on the awards show with a small baby bump as she performed a medley of her hits "No One," "Try Sleeping With A Broken Heart" "If I Ain't Got You," and "Unthinkable."

Purple pop icon Prince was honored with BET's Lifetime Achievement award and was feted by an all-female musical tribute including newcomer Janelle Monae (with "Let's Go Crazy"), jazz singer Esperanza Spalding (on "If I Was Ur Girlfriend") and Alicia Keys singing behind the piano (for "Adore"). Plus, Patti LaBelle brought the house down with a rendition of the eternal Prince standard "Purple Rain."</p><p></p> <P> Watch the video  below and  then take the poll above and tell us how well you think Chris Brown did.</p><p></p>
