Chicago violence: 5 dead, 28 wounded in shootings since Friday night, police say

(CBS) CHICAGO - Since Friday night, 5 men have been killed and 28 others have been wounded in shootings across Chicago, the  Sun Times Media Wire reported.

The station said the first of the fatal shootings took place in a neighborhood on the northwest side of the city when a gunman allegedly approached four people who were sitting on a porch and opened fire, according to police.

Renee Soto, a 21-year-old man, was taken to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital to be treated for multiple gunshot wounds and died a short time after, authorities told STMW.

Police said three others were wounded in the shooting, including a 17-year-old girl, a 28-year-old man and a 30-year-old man, and they are in stable condition, according to the station.

Authorities stated that about 20 minutes after the shooting, another one occurred in a separate location, leaving 36-year-old Uriel Guadarramo dead and a 37-year-old man in critical condition, said STMW.

The station reported that another man, who the Cook County Medical Examiner's office identified as 20-year-old Carl Austin, was shot dead around 4:30 p.m. on Saturday after a drive-by-shooting in a South Chicago neighborhood that left two others wounded.

The wounded, a 26-year-old and a 29-year-old, had gang affiliations, police told the Sun Times Media Wire.

The station said another man, 22-year-old Justin Jackson, was killed in a shooting that occurred around 9:20 p.m. Sunday night after 3 gunmen approached Jackson's car and fired upon Jackson and another man, according to police.

At 11:25 p.m. Sunday, authorities said 18-year-old Eduardo Venagas was fatally shot in the chest and the shoulder as he was standing on the sidewalk just a block from his home, according to STMW.

In total, 28 people were injured in shootings across the city of Chicago this week, said the Media Wire.
