(CBS) CHICAGO- Several Chicago police horses are recovering from an attack that occurred inside of their stable on Monday at the South Shore Country Club, where the police department's mounted unit is housed, CBS Chicago reports.

Someone reportedly broke into the stalls and let 27 of the 30 horses out of the stable, then sprayed fire extinguishers in the faces of the animals.

It also appears that the suspects threw the extinguishers and struck the horses.

"They did not enter this to commit a theft; rather, they entered this to maliciously harm our horses - for what reason, I don't know," Lt. Paul Bauer said.

All of the injured horses are doing well and are expected to recover and be back on the job as early as Tuesday, reports CBS Chicago.
