Chelsea Clinton won't rule out running for office

(CBS News) Chelsea Clinton may be following her parents into politics.

In an interview with Vogue magazine, the daughter of former President Bill Clinton and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said she wouldn't rule out running for office in the future.

"Before my mom's campaign I would have said no," she told the magazine, adding that people have been asking her that question her whole life.

She continued:

"And now I don't know...I mean, I have voted in every election that I have been qualified to vote in since I turned eighteen. I believe that engaging in the political process is part of being a good person. And I certainly believe that part of helping to build a better world is ensuring that we have political leaders who are committed to that premise. So if there were to be a point where it was something I felt called to do and I didn't think there was someone who was sufficiently committed to building a healthier, more just, more equitable, more productive world? Then that would be a question I'd have to ask and answer."

In the wide-ranging interview, the 32-year-old also discussed growing up in the spotlight, and how the media circus that surrounded her 2010 wedding to Marc Mezvinsky made her realize her celebrity was "something I could continue to ignore or it was something I could try to use to highlight causes that I really cared about."

"Historically I deliberately tried to lead a private life in the public eye," she said in the interview. "And now I am trying to lead a purposefully public life."

She also talked about following in her parents' footsteps in another way - by becoming a parent herself.

"It's certainly something that Marc and I talk a lot about," she said of having children. "I always knew I was the center of my parents' lives when I was growing up. And I am determined that our children feel the same way. Marc and I are both working really hard right now, but I think in a couple of years, hopefully...literally, God willing. And I hope my mom can wait that long."

The September issue of Vogue will hit newsstands on Aug. 21.
