Cecily Strong to co-anchor "Weekend Update" on "SNL"

"Saturday Night Live" will have some changes in place when it returns later this month.

Cecily Strong is joining Seth Meyers behind the "Weekend Update" anchor desk, according to "SNL" executive producer Lorne Michaels.

"Cecily, from the first show, was right there," Michaels told The New York Times. "She exploded."

Last season was Strong's first as an "SNL" regular. One of her regular characters -- "The Girl You Wish You Hadn't Started a Conversation With at a Party" -- made visits to "Weekend Update."

Michaels told the Times the plan has Strong initially sharing the "Update" desk with Meyers, then going solo when he begins hosting "Late Night" in February. An alternative option might find Meyers remaining as "Update" co-anchor even after starting his "Late Night" duties.

Additionally, NBC says "SNL" has added six featured players to its roster. Beck Bennett, John Milhiser, Kyle Mooney, Mike O'Brien, Noel Wells and Brooks Wheelan will join the troupe as "SNL" enters its 39th season on Sept. 28, with a premiere hosted by Tina Fey.
