Casey Anthony verdict spurs fight, Fla. man hits woman, gets arrested, say cops

(CBS/WKMG) MELBOURNE BEACH, Fla. - Out of the swamp...and into the river...surrounding the Casey Anthony case.

A Florida man was arrested over the weekend for allegedly striking a woman in the face during an argument over the verdict, and then jumping off a pier into the Indian River to elude police.

Officers were called to the Melbourne Beach pier about 11:55 p.m. Saturday about a fight. At the scene, the officers tried to make contact with the suspect, 42-year-old Robert Aydin Hakimoglu, who was accused of hitting a woman in the face while he was intoxicated, reports CBS affiliate WKMG.

Police said Hakimoglu saw officers approaching, so he jumped off the pier and into the river.

The Brevard County Sheriff's Office helicopter, along with Melbourne police, Indialantic police and the Melbourne Beach Fire Department, searched the river for two hours but did not locate Hakimoglu, authorities said.

Hakimoglu was later found at his home and arrested on charges of resisting arrest, battery, and alcohol ordinance violation, police said.

Hakimoglu was taken to the Brevard County Jail and booked on a $1,250 bond.

Police said the argument started over the Anthony trial. According to officers, Hakimoglu agreed with the jury's decision and said he would like to meet Anthony and "maybe have kids with her," reports WKMG.

Last week Anthony was acquitted on first-degree murder, aggravated child abuse and aggravated manslaughter charges in the death of her daughter, Caylee.

She was sentenced to a total of four years in jail on four counts of providing false information to law enforcement, as well as a fine of $4,000, plus court costs. However, due to credit for time served and good behavior, Anthony is scheduled to be released this Sunday, July 17.
