Carolyn Renee Miller, Fla. babysitter, sentenced to 13 years in prison for stuffing baby in cooler
(CBS/AP) MELBOURNE, Fla. - A central Florida woman, in charge of looking after a 7-month-old baby, has been sentenced to 13 years in prison for stuffing the child's body into a cooler.
Carolyn Renee Miller told authorities she was taking care of Ja'veon Mitchell in 2011 when she woke up to find him dead. She said she panicked and packed the body in a cooler and hid it behind her boyfriend's Titusville home.
The child died of unknown causes but the medical examiner testified he was leaning toward homicide or neglect. Miller pleaded no contest Friday to aggravated manslaughter of a child and improper disposal of a human body.
According to Florida Today, the 42-year-old woman was also sentenced to 6 years of drug offender probation in addition to the 13-plus years in prison for the Ja'veon's death.
The judge reportedly said Miller was being paid in crack cocaine to take care of the child.
Defense attorneys argued Miller was suffering from trauma from a tough upbringing.
The mother of the child won't be prosecuted, according to the site.
