Candidate for mayor accused of pointing AR-15 rifle in park
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- A Colorado Springs mayoral candidate was jailed for allegedly pointing an AR-15 rifle in a public park, CBS Denver reported.
Police said 48-year-old Justine Herring pointed the gun at another person and made threats on Saturday afternoon in Memorial Park. She was arrested on a menacing charge on Monday, and could also face a count of impersonating a peace officer. It's unclear if she knew the person at whom she's accused of pointing the weapon.
Herring is a real estate broker. When declaring her candidacy for mayor, she said she was tired of the fights between the city council and the mayor's office.
Her campaign's Facebook page says "Justice is coming 2015!" and that she's ostensibly running for mayor "because Colorado Springs is a big deal!"
The election is in April.
Herring is also featured in a reality TV show in which a camera followed her through Colorado Springs, including a visit to a camp for homeless residents.
In another scene, during a trip to a liquor store, Herring appears to pull a gun from her purse. The show ends with a confrontation between police, Herring and some men at a motel.
She appeared in court Tuesday on the menacing charge. Her bond was set at $6,000.
Colorado Springs Mayor Steve Bach is not running for re-election, and according to CBS Denver, state Attorney General John Suthers is among those interested in replacing him.
