Burglary suspect was carrying 5-month-old, say Fla. police
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- A 22-year-old man was arrested after he and another man were caught trying to break into a home with a baby in tow Monday evening, CBS affiliate WTSP reported.
The homeowner told police when he returned home around 5:45 p.m., he found one man standing near the back of the house holding the infant in a car seat carrier.
As he started to approach the man -- later identified as Corey Mathews -- Mathews yelled out to another man who was trying to break in through the back door. That man ran off, and Mathews started to walk away with his 5-month-old son, the station reported.
The homeowner followed Mathews down an alleyway while calling police. At one point, Mathews allegedly put the baby down on the ground, pulled out a knife and walked towards him threatening to kill him if he continued to follow.
The homeowner backed away as Mathews walked away from the area with the baby.
According to WTSP, Mathews was later stopped by responding officers still holding his son and with the knife still in his possession, and was positively identified by the homeowner.
The station says Mathews was charged with residential burglary, aggravated assault, child neglect and violation of probation (for battery on a officer). The other suspect has been tentatively identified, but not yet charged.
The baby was turned over to Mathews' mother.
