Roanoke County police say Brittany flew home with two detectives Monday night. Her father, Benjamin Smith, told CBS affiliate WDBJ at a news conference that her return was the happiest day of his life.
"I thought the happiest day of my life was when my daughter was born. Tonight has taken the number one spot," Brittany's father said.
The girl and her accused abductor, 32-year-old Jeffrey Scott Easley, hadn't been seen since they were spotted Dec. 3 on a surveillance video at a Walmart store outside Roanoke.
The girl's mother, Easley's girlfriend Tina Smith, was found dead last week at their southwestern Virginia home. Police consider her death a homicide.
Easley is expected to have his extradition hearing Tuesday morning in San Francisco.
