NEW YORK (CBS) Just weeks after Bristol Palin and Levi Johnston announced they were engaged again, Palin is now saying they're calling it quits.

"It's over. I broke up with him," she told People magazine on Tuesday of her second try at an engagement to the father of her 19-month-old son, Tripp.

In a phone interview that the magazine described as "emotional," the daughter of former vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin said that her relationship with Johnston soured on July 14 - the same day they announced their engagement to the world with a magazine story and photo shoot.

Palin said that Johnston told her that evening that he may have fathered a child with another teenage girl. The other girl was not identified, but a pregnant ex-girlfriend of Johnston's has denied he is the father of her baby.

The magazine notes that Palin spoke "through tears" about feeling "heartbroken, humiliated and trapped."

"There's been no remorse," she said of Johnston, adding that she's seen him only once in the past three weeks.

"The final straw was him flying to Hollywood for what he told me was to see some hunting show but come to find out it was that music video mocking my family," she continued. "He's just obsessed with the limelight and I got played."

Reps for Johnston did not return calls from the magazine seeking comment.

Sarah Palin weighed in on the breakup, telling People, "I wish for Bristol to be able to move forward in life with her same forgiving, gracious, optimistic spirit, but from henceforth she'll know to trust but verify. Bristol is strong, she is independent, and she knows what is right for her son."

Bristol also told the magazine that she still holds out hope of a two-parent home for her son.

"I have faith that I'll find it," she said. "Through this whole experience I know I need a man who's going to be completely honest with me and someone who loves me and Tripp and wants to be with him all the time. I also want someone who has religious beliefs and a good family."

Johnston and Bristol Palin called off their first engagement in March 2009.
