"Bridesmaids" now the top R-rated female comedy ever

(CBS) Movie studios, take note: "Sex" is out, "Bridesmaids" are in.

Judd Apatow's hit starring Kristen Wiig has surpassed "Sex and the City" to become the top R-rated female comedy of all time.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, "Bridesmaids" has earned $152.9 million as of Sunday. "Sex and the City" earned $152.6 million.

The film should finish out the July 4th holiday on Monday with a domestic total of $153.7 million, the report says.

"Bridesmaids" also surpassed "Knocked Up," which earned $148.8 million domestically, to become Apatow's highest-grossing film.

The film stars Wiig - who co-wrote the script with Annie Mumolo - alongside Maya Rudolph, Rose Byrne, Melissa McCarthy, Ellie Kemper and Wendi McLendon-Covey.
