Two car bombs exploded in quick succession near a Baghdad market Sunday night, killing 15 people and injuring 40, Iraqi police said.
The first bomb exploded in front of an ice cream shop in the capital's western al-Shoulah district, police Maj. Mousa Abdul Karim said. As people rushed to assist the wounded, a second bomb detonated within a few minutes, he said.

While at the hospital, he was escorted away by U.S. forces along with his brother, and their whereabouts could not immediately be determined. The U.S. military said it was investigating the incident.This week the level of violence has escalated to a point not seen since before the January elections. Earlier Sunday, a car bomb exploded outside a police academy in Saddam Hussein's hometown, and another one went off moments later as authorities rushed to the scene, killing at least six Iraqis and wounding 33, officials said. A U.S. soldier was killed in a Baghdad bomb attack.
On Saturday, at least 16 people were killed, including an American soldier, as the insurgents struck across the country with a series of bomb attacks.
