Best Thanksgiving Ever For Movie Biz

This Thanksgiving weekend was the best ever for Hollywood, thanks primarily to The Grinch, reports CBS News Early Show Pop Culture Contributor Laurie Hibberd in her Box Office Plus report.

This past weekend was certainly a case of how the Grinch ruled the box office. Here are the numbers according to Hollywood.com — keep in mind these are five-day totals because of the holiday weekend.

  • The Grinch was undoubtedly number one, taking in almost $74 million and raking in a total of $137 million in just two weeks.
  • Bruce Willis took the number two spot with his new release Unbreakable, pulling in $47.2 million.
  • 102 Dalmatians debuted at number three with nearly $27 million in box office sales.
  • Rugrats in Paris fell two slots to number four, with $27 million.
  • And Charlie's Angels rounds out the top five with $14 million.
Hibberd says the reason The Grinch is doing so well is because
it's a classic story.

"I think people are in the Christmas spirit and want to see a Christmas movie," she said.

"The amazing thing is Unbreakable did as well as it did in a weekend that is notoriously very family heavy," she said.

Hibberd thinks the movies were especially popular this Thanksgiving because "the summer movies proved to be such a disappointment...And they just want to escape and are so sick of seeing the political stuff on TV," she said.

Hibberd predicts that Rugrats In Paris will continue to perform well throughout the holiday season.

"I think you'll see it in the top five. It may slide back further. It's going into fourth place. But because we're in the family season and holiday season, this is what people want to see after they've seen The Grinch and other things," Hibberd said.
