Best Of Times, Worst Of Times

It has been a series of ups and down for Hollywood this year. Jess Cagle, senior editor of People magazine, is dropping by The Saturday Early Show to talk about the best and worst of 2005 in the world of celebrities, trends and movies. Here are some of the headlines he has in mind:

  • Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. Not only did they both star in the hit movie "Mr. and Mrs. Smith," but they fell in love as well. Brad has even gone so far as to take steps to become the legal guardian of Angelina Jolie's adopted children.

  • Kirstie Alley. Although her television show "Fat Actress" was canceled, she is doing very well personally. She has lost 55 pounds through diet and exercise.
  • Terrence Howard. He is having a great year as an actor, in such films as "Hustle and Flow" and "Crash." He is nominated for a Golden Globe for his work in "Hustle and Flow."

    Celebrities Who Had Bad Years

  • Russell Crowe. He gave one of his best performances in "Cinderella Man," winning a Golden Globe nomination. But he was more famous this year for throwing a telephone at a New York City hotel clerk on June 6. He pleaded guilty Nov. 18 and was given a conditional discharge (he has to stay out of trouble for a year). Hosting the Nov. 26 Australian Film Industry Awards, the 41-year-old actor walked onstage carrying an old-fashioned telephone. "If there are any problems, and you do get up here and go on too long," he told the nominees, "then hello to my little friend."
  • Jude Law. This is a man who seemed to have it all: great movie career, and he was engaged to the beautiful Sienna Miller. And then "Nannygate" broke, in which it was discovered that he had an affair with his children's nanny. Lately, reports have surfaced that Law and Miller have reconciled.
  • Anything Paris. We are all too familiar with the devastating scenes of Paris being set on fire by rioters. Even in the entertainment world, anything named Paris is not having a good year. First, Paris Hilton was very accident-prone this year. She was bitten by her pet kinkajou. Then she started dating Greek shipping heir Paris Latsis and the two were quickly engaged, only to result in a break-up. Now she is dating another Greek shipping heir, Stavros Niarchos.

    Best Trends

  • Adult comedies: Movies such as "Wedding Crashers" and "The 40-Year-Old Virgin" were huge hits this year. "Wedding Crashers" brought in $209 million and "The 40 Year-Old Virgin" brought in $109 million. These movies did not worry about being politically correct. They were just movies. They were movies made for adults and they were sophisticated in their own ways.
  • Celebrity weddings: This year it was an interesting collection of people who got married. Here is a list of a few of them:
    • Donald Trump and Melina Knauss
    • Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner
    • Prince Charles and Camilla
    • Jesse James and Sandra Bullock
    • Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher
    • Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood

    Celebrity Breakups

  • Renee Zellweger and Kenny Chesney: Four months after their beach wedding, they had their marriage annulled.
  • Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston: This couple lasted for four years. The split was confirmed in January after they released a joint statement saying they were formally separating. Pitt and Aniston began dating in 1998 after being set up on a blind date. They were married in a fairy-tale wedding on Malibu bluffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean.
  • Nick Lachey and Jessica Simpson

Skinny Actresses: Actresses such as Lindsay Lohan, Nicole Richie and Hillary Duff represent the standard of being beautiful by becoming impossibly thin.

Best Movie of 2005: "Brokeback Mountain." Says Cagle: "This movie was like nothing you have ever seen. It received seven Golden Glove nominations. The movie is beautifully shot. It is well acted, and Health Ledger gives a performance of a lifetime. It is the front runner for the best picture Oscar."

Worst Movie of 2005: "Bewitched." In theory, says Cagle, this movie sounded great. "However, it was badly done, starting with the concept that did not make sense. Characters were popping up in the movie that did not even make sense."
