Best Bets: "Our Idiot Brother" and the MTV VMAs
(CBS) You've been seeing the ads on TV for about six weeks. Now the movie is finally coming out. Will "Our Idiot Brother," starring Paul Rudd as the idiot and Elizabeth Banks, Zooey Deschanel and Emily Mortimer as his (presumably) non-idiot sisters, be funny and insightful or maudlin and movie-of-the-weekish. Find out on Friday, Aug. 26.
There are lots of big events in music this week. "Muppets: The Green Album," an all-star humans and Muppets collaboration featuring Weezer, OK Go and My Morning Jacket (to name just a few) comes out Tuesday, Aug. 23. You can stream the entire album at NPR.com.
Also on Tuesday, Patti Smith's "Outside Society" comes out, as does Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks' latest, "Mirror Traffic." The album is a collaboration with Beck. Listen to it here.
If you find yourself in New York and want to see some live tunes, check out the Dave Matthews Band Caravan from Aug. 26-28 on Governors Island. Dave Matthews Band performs each day. Other acts scheduled include The Roots (Sunday), Citizen Cope (Friday), Robert Randolph and the Family Band (Saturday) and Dispatch (Saturday). For the complete lineup, click here.
Finally, on Sunday, Aug. 28, the MTV Video Music Awards air. Who will win video of the year? Adele, Tyler, The Creator, Katy Perry, Beastie Boys or Bruno Mars?
If you've had a long summer and just want to relax with a good book, on Tuesday hit your local brick and mortar bookseller and look for new reads. Vanessa Diffenbaugh's debut novel "The Language of Flowers" is getting write-ups just about everywhere. Also coming out are "Cocktail Hour Under the Tree of Forgetfulness" by Alexandra Fuller, "Flash and Bones" by Kathy Reichs and Jussi Adler-Olsen's "The Keeper of Lost Causes."
