Babysitter Slipped Infant Wine in Sippy Cup, Gets 8 Years in Prison

(CBS)

CARROLLTON, Ga. (CBS/AP) Babysitting rule #1: Don't give wine to a 9-month-old!

A Georgia babysitter who admitted doing exactly that has been sentenced to eight years in prison.

The sitter, 41-year-old Tammy Denise Truitt of Carrollton, pleaded guilty on June 2 to aggravated battery.

Carrollton Police Lt. James Perry said lTruitt was hired to babysit the infant last July, along with his four siblings, ages 9, 7, 5 and 3, when the children's mother went to Atlanta for a family emergency.

According to the Times-Georgian, Truitt admitted to police she gave the 9-month-old wine -- in a sippy cup -- to get him to go to sleep.

Police said that when the children's grandmother arrived to pick up the kids, she found the baby unresponsive. He was taken to a hospital, where tests revealed a blood-alcohol level of .33.

That's more than four times the legal limit for an adult driver in Georgia.

Doctors in Carrollton and Atlanta treated the infant before sending him home, and he seems to be doing okay since then.

The babysitter got four years probation on top of her 8-year prison term.
