Baby Born To Daniel Pearl's Widow

Mariane Pearl, the widow of murdered Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl, gave birth to a boy on May 28 in Paris, his family said on Thursday .

Pearl's family said the baby, named Adam, weighs 5.7 pounds at birth and both mother and baby are doing well.

"Adam's birth rekindles the joy, love and humanity that Danny radiated wherever he went," Pearl's family said in a statement.

"The name Adam symbolizes the birth of humankind and the connectedness of civilizations. Danny also liked the name Adam because it reminded him of President John Quincy Adams, whose ideas of freedom and peace were so far ahead of his time."

Daniel Pearl disappeared in Karachi, Pakistan, on Jan. 23 while investigating links between Osama bin Laden's al Qaeda network, blamed for the Sept. 11 attacks on the United States, and suspected shoe-bomber Richard Reid.

A grisly videotape showing his death was delivered to the U.S. consulate in Karachi.

British-born Islamic militant Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh has been charged in Pakistan with masterminding Pearl's kidnap. Three other accused are on trial for allegedly acting on his instructions.

Pearl was born in Princeton, New Jersey and grew up in California. He was 38 when he was murdered. His killing, which The Wall Street Journal called "an act of barbarism," brought condemnation around the world.
