• Born Jane Dee Bowersock in Kansas City, she was raised in Mission, Kansas. Her father was the aviation editor of The Kansas City Star for 20 years.

• In 1954, she married Terry Hull. She attended the University of Kansas, where she received her bachelors degree in education and teacher certification in 1957.

• The Hulls moved to Arizona in 1962. They lived on a Navajo reservation in Chinle, Arizona, where her husband, an obstetrician, was working for the U.S. Public Health Service. She began teaching at the Chinle School and later taught English at the Junior High School.

• In 1964, they moved to Phoenix, where Dr. Hull completed his residency and then went into private practice. Jane Hull enrolled at Arizona State University, where she studied economics and political science.

• Hull became involved in Republican politics in Phoenix, and in 1978, she was elected to the Arizona House of Representatives to represent north central Phoenix. A decade later, she was elected Majority Whip, and in 1989, she became the stateÂ's first woman Speaker of the House.

• Hull gave up the speakership to launch a bid for statewide office. When she was elected Secretary of State in 1994, she was the first Republican elected to that office in more than 60 years.

• Hull was elevated to the offie of governor in September 1997, when her scandal-plagued predecessor, Fife Symington, was forced to resign. Since Arizona does not have a Lieutenant Governor, Hull, who was Secretary of State at the time, assumed the top office. She is the only person in the history of Arizona to have served as both Governor and Speaker of the House.
