Auburn WR Charged With Rape

Auburn receiver and punt returner Clifton Robinson was arrested and charged with second-degree rape, accused of having sex with a 15-year-old girl.

Robinson was suspended from the team pending the results of an investigation, according to school spokesman Kent Partridge.

Robinson, who started in nine games last season, was the Tigers' second-leading receiver last year with 42 receptions for 672 yards. He also led the team in all-purpose yards with 943.

The 20-year-old athlete apparently knows the teen-ager, according to police, who said the sex took place about 1:30 a.m. Wednesday in an apartment.

Robinson was released from the Lee County Justice Center on $10,000 bond. His court date was scheduled for mid-April.

Second-degree rape, a felony, occurs when a male over the age of 16 has sex with a female under the age of 16, provided the male is at least two years older than the female. The sex can be consensual. If convicted, Robinson could face a maximum of 20 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

Robinson was a reserve guard for the Auburn basketball team two years ago, averaging 1.4 points a game in 11 appearances.
