(CBS) CHASKA, Minn. - A teenage boy has died after being shot in the head with an arrow over the weekend... by his best friend.

Chaska police say they were called around 6:25p.m. Saturday on a report that a 16-year-old had been hit with an aluminum arrow shaft, CBS Minnesota reported.

The boy, identified as Spenser Swanson, was transported to one medical center, and then to Hennepin County Medical Center.

Swanson died from his injuries Monday night.

Chasta Police Chief Scott Knight says it appears to be purely accidental, CBS Minnesota reported.

"The actions of him coming to the house was independent, so there was no target practice of any nature that we know of," he said.

Police say Swanson was riding his bicycle to his friend's house to visit when he was hit. It's not clear if the bow handler, the victim's best friend, saw him when he drew back on the bow and fired the arrow.

The investigation is ongoing.
