Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer: Tucson Shootings are an Assault on Our Democracy

In a press conference on Monday, Arizona Governor Jan Brewer lamented the loss of innocent lives in Saturday's tragic shooting in Tucson, Arizona, and condemned the act of violence as an "assault on our constitutional republic - on our democracy."

"Tragedy and terror sometimes come from the shadows - and steal our joy and take away our peace," Brewer said during her remarks. "That happened on Saturday when a gunman took away people we love, innocent people, and outstanding public servants - like U.S. District Judge John M. Roll."

Six people were killed and 14 injured on Saturday in Tucson, Arizona, when 22-year-old Jason Lee Loughner allegedly opened fire at a political meeting being held outside of a supermarket. Democratic congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, who was holding the meeting, was shot in the head and is currently being treated for critical injuries.

"It was a sunny Saturday at the supermarket in Northwest Tucson; it was a picture of what our country is all about: public servants doing their duty," Brewer said of the events leading up to the shootings. "Citizens old and young, coming to hear, coming to participate in the beauty of our government in action," she continued.

Brewer led a moment of silence in honor of the victims and their families, and recognized 20-year-old Daniel Hernandez for tending to Giffords after she was shot.

Hernandez "showed no fear in the face of gunfire," Brewer said, adding that his "quick action in going to Gabby Giffords' aid likely saved her life."

Brewer also spoke about Christina Green, the nine-year-old girl who was shot and killed during the chaos. Green, Brewer said, "was just elected to her student council" and "was hoping to be a positive part of the future of America."

"She loved baseball -- she was the only girl on her Little League baseball team; and she loved to wear red, white and blue," Brewer said.

Brewer also noted that Green was born on September 11, 2001, and "thought of her birthday as a day of hope -- a time to find goodness in America."

"Arizona is in pain, yes. Our grief is profound," Brewer said. "We are yet in the first hours of our sorrow -- but, we have not been brought down. We will never be brought down."
