Arizona Burns Down Angels

Some nights, Armando Reynoso feels he should pay to get to pitch for the Arizona Diamondbacks, not get paid.

"This is a pretty exciting team, with an excellent offense. That kind of offense helps you relax," Reynoso said Friday night after the Diamondbacks got 18 hits and routed the Anaheim Angels 12-2.

Jay Bell, Kelly Stinnett, Steve Finley and Andy Fox homered, increasing Arizona's National League-leading total to 96.

Bell already has 19 homers, two shy of his career best, set with Kansas City two years ago.

"Nobody in baseball is more surprised than I am," Bell said. "I'll take a little credit for it, but most of the credit belongs to the guys around me."

  • Matt Williams went 4-for-5, and Bell and Stinnett each went 3-for-5 as the Diamondbacks increased their league-leading batting average to .289.

"I made some mistakes and they made me pay for it," loser Ken Hill said. "They've got some guys who can make you pay."

Arizona has scored 51 runs in Reynoso's last five starts. He allowed five hits in eight shutout innings, retiring 17 of his last 19 batters.

Arizona manager Buck Showalter pulled Reynoso (4-1) after 106 pitches, but he checked with the pitcher first.

"I wondered how important it was for him to get the complete game, the shutout. Had it been a real big deal to him, I would've let him finish the game," Showalter said.

John Frascatore relieved and gave up Troy Glaus' two-run homer with two outs in the ninth.

Bell, Finley and Travis Lee each drove in two runs, as did Williams, whose two-run single capped a six-run sixth.

Williams, hitting .379 (22-for-58) during a 13-game hitting streak, matched a career high with his 12th four-hit game.

Hill (3-5), trying to stretch a winning streak to three for the first time since April 1998, allowed five runs and nine hits in 5 1-3 innings.

David Dellucci's RBI single put Arizona ahead in the second. Homers by Bell in the third and Stinnett in the sixth made it 3-0.

Finley's 15th homer, a two-run shot, chased Hill in a six-run sixth Tony Womack's sacrifice fly off Mike Magnante and Bell's double made it 7-0. Williams added a single off Shigetoshi Hasegawa.

Lee hit a two-run double in the eighth and Fox homered in the ninth.

    Notes:

  • Arizona is 20-8 at home but just 16-17 on the road.
  • Luis Gonzalez entered the game 3-for-37 against Hill, and went 1-for-3 against his nemesis.
  • Lee, who scored once, has an 11-game scoring streak, totaling 16 runs in that stretch.
  • Angels shortstop Gary DiSarcina (broken left forearm) had two fielding chances in four innings and went 0-for-3 Friday night in the second game of his rehab assignment with Class-A Lake Elsinore.
