Ariz. Shooting Update: Jared Loughner's lawyers aim to keep certain records from prosecutors
(CSB/AP) PHOENIX - Attorneys for Jared Lee Loughner, the suspect in the Tucson, Ariz. shooting rampage, want a judge to prohibit federal prison officials from passing along confidential medical or psychological records about their client to federal prosecutors.
They're asking a judge to bar the Bureau of Prisons from releasing information about visits by Loughner's defense team, observations about him by prison staff, and any information that isn't regularly released in prosecutions.
Loughner has been jailed since the Jan. 8 shooting at a political event held by Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, in which six people were killed, and Giffords and 12 others were wounded.
Loughner had pleaded not guilty to charges of trying to assassinate Giffords and kill two of her aides.
A U.S. Attorney's Office spokesman declined to comment on the defense request to squelch the information.
