Are Republicans Overestimating their Political Prospects for November?
On Friday's episode of "Washington Unplugged," DCCC chairman Chris Van Hollen warned Republicans against "prematurely popping the champagne bottles" regarding the outcome of November's midterm elections. He argued that Americans aren't interested in voting for the extreme policies of Tea Party candidates.
"There's a big disconnect" between what's happening politically in American communities and what Washington pundits are predicting, Van Hollen told host Bob Schieffer.
"The fact of the matter is, as we get closer and closer to Election Day, people are focusing more and more on the choice between the candidates... Some of these guys are way off on the right. People are going to be very uneasy, I think, about going in the direction some of these very, very right-wing candidates want to take the country," Van Hollen argued.
"What happened in Delaware the other day, with Michael Castle's loss, sent a very clear signal that there is no room for moderates, there is no room for pragmatists in the Republican party," Van Hollen said.
The Congressman cited "significant progress" in the administration's economic recovery efforts and expressed his doubt that voters would elect candidates representing the Republican economic agenda.
"We need to continue to move forward," Van Hollen said. "And as we listen to what the Republican leadership says it would do if given the opportunity... people are learning that, number one, it's no different than the same economic policies that got us into this mess, and now in some cases... they're saying there's absolutely no role for the government in protecting consumers."
He also condemned what he called a "gross political strategy" by Republicans to delegitimize the administration and President Obama.
