Anna Chapman's Ex: She Denies All

The woman dubbed the "Modern-Day Mata Hari" by many media outlets - the accused Russian spy who's been going by the American name Anna Chapman - insists she's done nothing wrong, her ex-husband says.

Chapman is one of 11 people taken into custody in an espionage probe - though none has actually charged with snooping. Ten, all in the United States and including Chapman, are still behind bars, while the eleventh is being sought after skipping bail in Cyprus

Her former husband, Alex Chapman, spoke with Anna Friday, according to Alex's newly-hired publicist, Max Clifford.

Clifford told "Early Show on Saturday Morning" co-anchor Rebecca Jarvis Alex is struggling to make sense of what's happening.

Alex, who was married to Anna from 2002-2006, lives on the southern English coast and is training to become a psychologist.

Clifford told Jarvis that Alex "came to see me yesterday. He called me on Thursday, together with his mother and father, and asked me to help him deal with the world's media interest. And he explained to me during the course of our conversation yesterday at my office that he'd been speaking to Anna yesterday.

" … He said that she was in a state of shock. He said that she was very upset and he said that she was denying this and said the whole thing is total nonsense and there's no truth in it.

"And he is totally confused because, of course, there's a lot of stuff which has come out, which has made him really not know what's going on and what has gone on."

Does he think Anna is telling the truth?

"Of course," Clifford responded, "anything is possible, which is what he said. But, what he explained was that in the last two years -- they were married four years and remained good friends ever since -- but he said in the last couple years of their marriage, she was increasingly distant and increasingly secretive, and she would be going off to events and parties where there were a lot of very rich, powerful and influential people from, you know, the upper echelons, if you like, of British society. And when put to him by (the British intelligence service) MI5 and obviously the accusations were put to him, he said, 'Well, of course, I start to have doubts now as to what was going on because, as our relationship went along, she became increasingly secretive and increasingly distant.' He said to me, 'I thought maybe she was having an affair, but who knows?' So, he's totally confused. But Anna said to him yesterday that there's absolutely no truth in any of these allegations where she's concerned."

MI5, Clifford said, interviewed Alex "at length, and he's told them everything that he knows and everything that went on, and he's made it very clear that he's happy to cooperate and answer any questions that anybody wants to put to him."

Clifford continued, "He, himself, seems to be totally confused, as well as totally shocked, as you can imagine, about what's suddenly appearing in the world's media in the last few days."
