Angels Waive Jack McDowell

Former Cy Young Award winner Jack McDowell, who failed in his attempt to make a comeback from elbow and shoulder surgery, was placed on unconditional release waivers Monday by the Anaheim Angels.

The 33-year-old right-hander, who joined the Angels as a free agent in February 1998 and re-signed for this season, was 0-4 with an 8.05 ERA in four starts. He began the season on the disabled list and wasn't activated until July 23.

The 13-year veteran and three-time All-Star led the Chicago White Sox to the 1993 AL West title with a league-leading and career-high 22 victories joining Early Wynn and LaMarr Hoyt as the only Chicago White Sox pitchers to win the Cy Young Award. He has a 127-87 career record with 62 complete games and a 3.85 ERA.

Anaheim called up 27-year-old right-hander Lou Pote from Triple-A Edmonton, where he was 7-9 with a 4.50 ERA in 23 starts and one relief appearance. Last season in Double-A, he was 8-10 with a 5.31 ERA in 19 starts and 13 relief appearances for Midland.
