(CBS/AP) LAS VEGAS - A self-described pimp accused in a shooting and fiery crash that killed three people on the Las Vegas Strip was moved under tight security after police received information that he contemplated escape, authorities said Tuesday.

Ammar Harris, 27, was booked into Clark County jail in Las Vegas after being held in Los Angeles since his Feb. 28 arrest at an apartment in Studio City following an intense manhunt.

"We took no chances," Las Vegas police Capt. Chris Jones said. "We had information that he was contemplating attempts to escape, but the transfer was uneventful."

Harris was due to appear Wednesday before a Las Vegas justice of the peace on three felony murder counts, one count of attempted murder, and several felony counts of firing a weapon.

The charges stem from a pre-dawn shooting on Feb. 21 that killed the driver of a Maserati sports car, which slammed into a taxi that burst into flames. Five people were injured in chain-reaction crashes.

Police said Harris fired shots from his black Range Rover SUV at aspiring rapper Kenneth Cherry Jr. after the two exchanged angry words near the Aria resort and engaged in a short chase along Las Vegas Boulevard.

Police found no gun in the Maserati and no evidence that Cherry returned fire before the Maserati slammed into the cab that killed the driver, 62-year-old Michael Boldon, and his passenger, 48-year-old Sandra Sutton-Wasmund.

The SUV was found two days later at an apartment complex near the Strip, triggering the manhunt for Harris.

Members of a joint Las Vegas-area police-FBI criminal apprehension team handled the overnight transfer of Harris.
