"American Idol" fans send Jacob Lusk packing

Jacob Lusk performs on "American Idol" FOX

(CBS) After Wednesday night's who is "in it to win it" edition of "American Idol" it was clear who was the most likely candidate to be sent home.

The gospel-gifted Jacob Lusk hasn't been able to find his comfort zone, despite his off-the-chart voice and the high notes he can reach.

Judge JLo said she had always been unsure who Lusk was in his performances on Wednesday's competition show. Randy Jackson called one of his two performances on Wednesday "corny."

Jacob explained his song choice logic: "I am an artist that appeals to everybody."

On Thursday, after the 60 million votes were tallied, it was determined that Jacob did not appeal to enough people.

For entertainment other than Fox Idol subtraction, the top five opened the show with a rough rendition of The Turtles 1967 hit "So Happy Together." This was followed by a tasteless omelette cook-off with Fox's caustic "Hell's Kitchen" Chef Gordon Ramsey.

For more professional entertainment, Grammy award winner Lady Antebellum performed "Just a Kiss" and JLo took to her Idol stage to perform the #1 song from her new album in the grand, over-the-top tradition of younger contemporaries like Katie Perry and Lady Gaga. Based on her voice, JLo would have a hard time qualifying for "American Idol." But as we have learned on the show, it takes more than a voice to win the votes.

Next week, Lauren Alaina, James Durbin, Scotty McCreedy and Haley Reinhart will continue the competition. As Idol producer/mentor Jimmy Iovine said, Lauren, who received the second lowest vote total, will have to overcome her fear to avoid the next fall of the axe.
