American Girl Jewelry Recalled

American Girl and the Consumer Product Safety Commission say the company is voluntarily recalling jewelry sold in its Chicago, New York and Oshkosh, Wis. stores due to a lead poisoning hazard.

High levels of lead can be toxic when ingested by young children, though no injuries related to the affected jewelry have been reported.

Some 180,000 pieces of the toy jewelry made by the Middleton, Wis. Company, a division of Mattel, are included in the recall. The products were sold from May 1999 through February 2006 for between $8 and $12.

The recall includes American Girl necklaces, bracelets, earrings and hair accessories for girls. It doesn't include jewelry for American Girl dolls, or jewelry sold through its catalogue or Web site.

The jewelry's packaging features a red and white cardboard backing with "American Girl" and "Made in China" written on the front.

The company urges consumers to immediately take any of the recalled jewelry away from children, and return the items for a full refund.
