Amazon AutoRip includes free digital copy with purchase of CDs

Amazon announced Thursday the launch of a service called AutoRip, which gives users a free digital version of CDs that are purchased from the company's website.

Customers will be able to claim a free copy of music going back all the way to 1998 when Amazon first opened its music store, which will be stored in Amazon's Cloud Player library for streaming, the company says. 

Over 50,000 albums from every major record label are available for AutoRip. Albums like "21" by Adele, "Dark Side of the Moon" by Pink Floyd and "Thriller" by Michael Jackson are eligible for the AutoRip service.

Amazon says customers who want to know if a CD has a free digital download should look for the AutoRip logo.

To use AutoRip customers must be signed in with their Amazon accounts. Music can be streamed online or on mobile devices from Amazon Cloud player.

Users who have CDs that are eligible for AutoRip will receive notification when Cloud Player is launched for the first time after the service takes effect. AutoRip is currently only available in the U.S.
